A 67-year-old woman remained imprisoned for 22 years at the home of her brother and sister-in-law, in the Molise region of central Italy. She was freed by the local carabinieri, after an anonymous complaint, and has already taken her to a safe accommodation.

Prosecutors call this whole story “horrific”. The old woman had moved into her brother’s house shortly after her husband’s death. At first everything seemed to be going smoothly, but after a while the situation changed. Maria, as the Italian media is calling her, was forced to leave the main house and go into the courtyard, in a storage room without a radiator. She was allowed to wash only once a month, in boats. He could not meet or talk to anyone and the warehouse was always closed, from the outside, with thick string and nails.

The only “supervised exit” was to a small salon, where Maria was allowed to have her hair cut, but without talking to the hairdresser. She did not have the right to use the toilet of the house nor to go to the cemetery, to her husband’s grave. The carabinieri emphasized that the woman was able to stay alive thanks to her enormous endurance and will and that – even if only with her eyes – she was trying to make everyone who saw understand, going to the small hair salon outside the town of Campobasso, the sufferings that it happened every day.
