It is estimated that over 1 million people will want to say goodbye to the UK’s longest-serving monarch in person.
The coffin with the body was carried in a silent procession by members of the Royal Cavalry on a hearse to the building that houses the parliament, on a route of about 1,800 meters, which took 40 minutes.
The casket is covered with the royal banner and on it is placed the Imperial Crown, which among other things is adorned with a gem cut from the world’s largest diamond, known as the Cullinan.
The body of the late queen was accompanied by members of the royal cavalry, while King Charles and Elizabeth’s three other children followed on foot, and in the second row her grandchildren, including Princes William and Harry, as well as other members of the royal family.
Of the members of the royal family, only Princes Harry and Andrew do not wear military uniforms as they have renounced their royal duties and privileges.
The procession takes place to the sounds of mournful cannon fire from Hyde Park and the bell of the restored Big Ben.
In parliament the coffin will be welcomed by the Speaker of the House of Commons and the speaker of the House of Lords while it will also be received by the Queen’s Grenadier Guards who will place it in the central hall of the parliament on a raised pedestal. It will be followed by a 20-minute service led by the prelate of the Anglican Church, Archbishop of Canterbury Justin Welby.
Immediately after the end of the service the members of the royal family will return to Buckingham by road and at 7 o’clock Greek time the popular pilgrimage will begin which will conclude at 8:30 on the morning of the funeral on Monday, September 19.
