Britain is using Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a “pretext” to not invite Russian leader Putin to Queen Elizabeth’s funeral, a Russian diplomatic spokeswoman says.

“Blasphemy” and “immoral” characterized by Russia the UK attitudebecause no Russian officials were invited in Queen Elizabeth’s funeralamid diplomatic tension between the two countries.

“We consider the attempt to use for geopolitical purposes this national tragedy that touched the hearts of millions of people around the world (…) profoundly immoral,” said the representative of Russian diplomacy, Maria Zakharova. “It is particularly blasphemous when it comes to the memory of Elizabeth II,” he added.

The spokeswoman expressed her regret that, she claims, Britain is using the Russian invasion of Ukraine as a “pretext” to not invite the Russian leader to the funeral on September 19.

Few countries, such as North Korea, Myanmar, Syria and Venezuela, have not been invited to the funeral. “Now, the British elite is on the side of the Nazis,” Zakharova said, referring to the significant military and financial support London provides to Ukraine.

Heads of state and government from around the world and more than 100 members of royal houses, as well as other dignitaries, have been invited to Elizabeth’s funeral, a rare diplomatic event.
