Police fined the man in a bid to maintain “decency” and protect fountains and monuments in the city

An American tourist visiting Rome has been ordered to pay hundreds of euros in fines after he was caught eating ice cream while sitting in one of the city’s fountains.

The 55-year-old traveler was fined 450 euros for sitting on the steps at the Fontana dei Catecumeni in Piazza della Madonna dei Monti and starting eating around 1 a.m. Saturday, CNN reported, citing local police.

Officers fined the man in an effort to maintain “decency” and protect fountains and monuments in the city, as he “intended to drink and eat in part of the fountain”.

The fountain is made of travertine and was built by Battista Rusconi around 1588 – 1589. In 1997, restoration work was carried out.

The famous city also bans drinking on the streets, organizing bar tours, etc., CNN reported.

In 2019, the city government imposed a heavy fine on those who sit, eat or drink on the city’s Spanish Steps, once a popular and iconic place to rest.
