“Little Amal”, a huge puppet “symbol of the refugee”, walked yesterday Friday in the famous Times Square of New York, as part of the campaign to raise awareness of the international public opinion about the refugee children who have been separated from their families.
The 3.6 meter tall puppet Amal, whose name means “hope” in Arabic, started her journey from the Syria-Turkey border in July 2021, met Ukrainian refugees across Europe and in the coming days will tour New York.
Amal represents a 10-year-old girl looking for her mother, who left her for a short while in search of food and never returned, explains Peter Avery, New York City art director and producer of Little Amal Walks New York events. (Little Amal walks in New York).
Broadway performers and about 200 students serenaded Amal to calm her down as she crossed the bustling square in the American metropolis.
“To see a little … refugee girl from Syria get a rock star welcome around the world is heartwarming,” said Eric Sirakian, who stars in the Broadway play Kites Over the City.
Amal is an inspired creation of the Handspring Puppet Company from South Africa. She comes to life thanks to a puppeteer, who is inside her and controls her facial expressions. Each arm of the puppet is moved by external puppeteers.
Little Amal’s message to the world is “Don’t forget us!”, Avery emphasized
