Zelensky’s commitment that all lands will be recaptured

Russia seized large swathes of southern and eastern Ukraine when it invaded in February. It continues to hold roughly one-fifth of Ukrainian territory.

As the Ukrainian army continued its advance into eastern regions of the country on Sunday, President Volodymyr Zelensky pledged in his evening speech that all Russian-held areas of Ukraine would be retaken.

“Perhaps it seems that after a series of victories we have a certain decline in activity,” said Mr. Zelensky, hastening to add that in fact “preparation” is underway for the recapture of Mariupol, Melitopol and Kherson, in his view the next stage of the counterattack.

“Because Ukraine must be free — whole,” the Ukrainian military plans not only to recapture territory it controlled before Russian forces invaded on February 24, but also areas in the Donbass and Crimea that fell into the hands of pro-Russian separatists. Moscow separatists since 2014, according to Mr. Zelensky.
