China has closed its borders to foreign tourists after the 2020 COVID outbreak

China’s government today issued draft rules aimed at making it easier for some foreign nationals to enter China to visit tourist sites along the Chinese border.

Tour groups organized by travel agencies in border areas in China can choose their ports of entry and exit from the country “flexibly,” China’s Ministry of Culture and Tourism said in a statement, without elaborating on the locations. this announcement is not about the timetable for this measure either.

China has closed its borders to foreign tourists since the outbreak of COVID-19 in 2020, allowing only certain groups of foreign nationals to enter the country, such as those with certain work visas.

In recent months, the rules have been gradually relaxed, starting with the resumption of more direct flights between China and some countries to allowing foreign students with valid residence permits to enter Chinese territory. The quarantine provided for arrivals from abroad was also reduced.

China shares borders with more than 10 countries, including Russia, Mongolia, Myanmar, Laos and Vietnam.

Chinese cities along the border often face the issue of imported cases of the novel coronavirus COVID-19 linked to the transit of foreign and Chinese citizens.
