“It was a big shock to me when I heard she was seriously ill because she had been in amazingly good shape over the weekend,” revealed the 68-year-old priest, Iain Greenshields
Just five days before her death, the 68-year-old Reverend Iain Greenshields, moderator of the Church of Scotland’s General Assembly, spent the entire weekend with the Queen at Balmoral where he made her final confession.
Speaking to ABC News, Greenshields revealed that the Queen’s Christian faith has been unwavering throughout her 70-year reign. “At the beginning of her reign she had said that she would ask God for wisdom. And that’s what she did all her life. And when I spoke to her about her faith, she told me that she had no regrets at all.”

He said that weekend Queen Elizabeth was in good spirits during his stay and was joking around with him. She revealed that despite being 96 and visibly frail, she transformed into “a different person” as soon as she started talking.
“It just seemed amazing that a woman who was so active, so alive, so attractive, should suddenly die and be away from us,” added the cleric, speaking to The Times.
The 68-year-old priest lunched and dined with the 96-year-old monarch, the Prince of Wales and Princess Anne that Sunday. He also recalled that the queen had an excellent memory and a keen sense of humor.
“It was a fantastic visit. Her memory was absolutely amazing and she was really full of fun,” he said, adding: “It was a big shock to me when I heard she was seriously ill because she was in amazingly good shape over the weekend.”
“He was the life and soul of things. She talked to me very personally about her time there as a child, she talked about her horses from the past(…) She was quite remarkable.”
Greenshields paid tribute to Her Majesty the Queen’s “loyalty, service and devotion” after her death, saying it was “the hallmark of her long reign”.
“She has been a constant in our nation’s life for over seven decades and most of us have grown up knowing only her as our monarch,” he said. “Tireless in her duty, the Queen has demonstrated a lifetime of selfless devotion.”
