Italy’s former prime minister has hinted at the possibility of the far-right politician’s conservative coalition winning
The former prime minister of Italy and former president of the European Commission, Romano Prodi, in an interview with the TV channel La7, referred tonight to the Italian parliamentary elections that will be held on September 25 and the possibility that the conservative alliance led by the far-right Giorgia Meloni will win .
“Meloni in the election campaign is capable, but being a leader is a different thing: you have to keep your eyes on the future and calculate the consequences of your decisions. In Europe, we all put our fists on the table in favor of our interests, Draghi and I did. With negotiations, but also with “give and take”. The point is to be on the same wavelength as the fully democratic countries that are promoting the European vision,” stressed Prodi.
“I remember that when Haider, in Austria, achieved a significant result in the elections, as president of the Commission I was under great pressure to punish his country. And I answered: we do not punish for the result of the election, but for specific behaviors. Now, for example, in Hungary these attitudes exist,” added the Italian former prime minister.
Regarding the possibility that the new Italian government will be led by a far-right party, Romano Prodi underlined: “There is, indeed, great concern regarding the possibility of this right winning. We will see if – then – this concern will turn into a “state of emergency” for our democracy. What I fear most is that as a country we may become isolated and lose our bargaining power. That is, it is possible for someone to bang his fist on the table, but there is also the possibility of breaking his arm. Meloni’s references to Orbán are references to nationalism, even race, concepts that clearly oppose European fundamentals and promote a regressive society.”
