Zaporizhia: The head of the IAEA will travel to Ukraine and Russia

The situation at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is “deteriorating and we cannot afford to wait until something catastrophic happens,” the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency warned today, following Ukraine’s accusations of fresh shelling by Russian forces in region.

The head of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), Raphael Grossi, hopes to travel to Ukraine and Russia soon to press for an agreement to demilitarize the region where the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is located.

Speaking to reporters at UN headquarters, Grossi said “real negotiations” with the two countries are now beginning and he wants an agreement reached as soon as possible.

It was reported earlier that the power line to one of the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant’s reactors was damaged by today’s shelling, forcing the unit to temporarily turn on its oil-fired generators until power was restored (which it eventually was). The operation of the remaining five reactors was not affected, the IAEA statement said.

The situation at the Zaporizhia nuclear power plant is “deteriorating and we cannot afford to wait until something catastrophic happens,” the director-general of the International Atomic Energy Agency warned today, following Ukraine’s accusations of fresh shelling by Russian forces in region.

Grossi said he discussed the matter with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov, whom he met this morning on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly.

The factory, which is controlled by Russian forces, has been the target of bombings several times in recent months. Kyiv and Moscow blame each other for these bombings.
