Podcast: Putin’s Nuclear Threat and the New Phase of the Ukraine War

by

About seven months after the start of the invasion of Ukraine, Russian President Vladimir Putin announced on Wednesday (21) a partial mobilization of 300,000 reservists to fight in the war. He made new nuclear threats, saying Western powers had crossed all boundaries and that Russia would use “all means at its disposal” to defend itself.

The announcement comes at a time when the Russian army is suffering a setback in the war, with Ukrainian forces recapturing territories that had been in Moscow’s hands since the invasion began.

Putin’s threats were answered the same day by his opponents. In a speech at the UN, US President Joe Biden called the speech “irresponsible” and accused Russia of violating the UN charter.

In this Thursday’s episode (22), Café da Manhã talks to the professor of international relations at FGV (Fundação Getúlio Vargas) Oliver Stuenkel about the new phase of the Ukrainian war and the risks that the threats of a nuclear conflict pose.
