#Hashtag: Bolsonaro’s speech at the UN ignites discussions about the pope on the networks

by

This Wednesday (21) Twitter became a space for debate about Pope Francis. Some profiles are positioned opposite to the pontiff. Among the reasons raised, tweeters emphasize the lack of action by the Church on the persecuted priests and nuns in Nicaragua.

Supporters of President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) took the opportunity to thank him for his speech at the 77th UN General Assembly, in which he declared that Brazil is open to these refugees – a message reinforced by the president’s official profile. “Thanks Jair Bolsonaro, you not only felt the pain, but you decided to welcome the persecuted of the Church.”

Some posts have been made by people who claim to be Catholic but do not respect the current pope. Others call him an “undercover militant”. Twitter users from other countries endorse questions to the pontiff.

On the other hand, profiles question Catholics who invalidate the supreme leader of the Catholic Church, and problematize controversial publications. “The pope you would admire is if he had a picture like that, right?” replied one, attaching a picture of Pope Pius XII next to Hitler.

Profiles question what reading of the Bible Catholics critical of the pontiff have. “They don’t respect the pope but they respect a guy imitating people dying of shortness of breath and who talks to machine-gun opponents”.

Others relate disgust to the lies that former president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), if elected, would wipe out the country’s churches. In response to Bolsonarist arguments, others tweet that the pope does not represent the group. “God is love. Bolsonarismo is a disease of hate that kills others.”
