Bulgaria: We rescued 38 migrants in the Black Sea

It is the first time since 2014 that irregular migrants have been detected in Bulgarian territorial waters, noted the head of the regional border guard, Anton Mirkov.

The Ministry of the Interior of Bulgaria announced that 38 migrants, who were trying to reach Romania by boat, were rescued today by the coast guard in the Black Sea.

It is the first time since 2014 that irregular migrants have been detected in Bulgarian territorial waters, noted the head of the regional border guard, Anton Mirkov.

They are 22 men, eight women and eight children (from Syria and Afghanistan) who had left Turkey. The 7-8 meter long vessel was found unruly in the middle of a storm in the Black Sea, having “run out of fuel”, according to Mirkov.

Bulgarian authorities have recently reported increased pressure from migrant flows on the country’s 259-kilometer border with Turkey. About 300 soldiers have been sent to the border to reinforce the barbed-wire fence, while controls have been stepped up after the death of two police officers on August 25 in Burgas (east). The two policemen were dragged away by a bus carrying migrants.
