Brazil’s former president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, 76, has narrowly extended his lead over current head of state Jair Bolsonaro, 67, to 14 percentage points, a Datafolha poll released Thursday showed, leaving only less than two weeks until the first round of the presidential election on October 2.

According to this rolling poll, Lula is credited with 47% of voting intentions (+2 from the previous version of the survey), while Mr. Bolsonaro maintained his own percentage at 33% (unchanged).

The former president’s lead over the incumbent stood at 21 points in May and 29 in December.

Should a run-off be held on October 30, the centre-left former president will prevail, securing 54% of the vote to the Brazilian far-right leader’s 38%. Lula’s 16-point lead heading into a runoff was unchanged from last week.

The approval and disapproval ratings of Mr. Bolsonaro’s job in the presidency showed a marginal improvement compared to last week (32% and 44% respectively, compared to 30% and 44% a week earlier).

The Datafolia poll was conducted using the method of personal interviews with a representative sample of 6,754 voters from September 20 to 22. The margin of statistical error is ±2%.
