“There should be no impunity. This is our commitment to the victims, especially the most vulnerable victims, the women, the girls, the elderly,” Ms. Burbock said yesterday Thursday during an event on the sidelines of the 77th UN General Assembly in New York.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Berbock called on the international community to support efforts to prosecute Russia’s crimes in Ukraine under international law.

“There should be no impunity. This is our commitment to the victims, especially the most vulnerable victims, the women, the girls, the elderly,” Ms. Burbock said yesterday Thursday during an event on the sidelines of the 77th UN General Assembly in New York.

The event, moderated by human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, was attended by representatives from Ukraine, Denmark, the Netherlands and Estonia, among others.

According to Mrs. Burbok, the issue is not that crimes of this nature are prosecuted in Europe and Ukraine only, but also in countries such as Myanmar and Ethiopia.

“We cannot tolerate rape and other forms of sexual violence, regardless of where they are committed,” said Germany’s foreign minister.

In March, German prosecutors began investigating war crimes committed by all sides in Ukraine.

The German government is also in favor of an International Criminal Court investigation into crimes in Ukraine, as well as Ukraine’s appeal against Russia at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

For Ms. Burbok, it is critical in these proceedings that responsibilities at both the state and individual level for violations of international law, including the highest echelons of the Russian government, be examined.
