The eighth edition of the European Week of Sport will be launched today with an opening ceremony in Prague and will run until 30 September. Every year since 2015, the European Week of Sport has promoted more active and healthy lifestyles for millions of people in Europe and beyond.

According to the recent Eurobarometer survey on sport and physical activity, 45% of Europeans never exercise. Therefore, the promotion of sport and physical exercise is still necessary, which is why the European Week of Sport was created.

This year’s event will focus on three main themes: youth, healthy lifestyles, and inclusion and equality.

In order to raise awareness of the ongoing issues of equality between women and men in sport and in response to the report of the High Level Panel on Equality between Women and Men in Sport, Willemain van Achelen, Dutch field hockey player and coach , will be one of the European ambassadors of the week.

Throughout the week, events will be held in 40 countries, including EU Member States, Erasmus+ countries, as well as Western Balkans and Eastern Partnership countries, spreading the #BeActive message and supports the HealthyLifestyle4All initiative, which promotes a healthy lifestyle for all. Tomorrow Commissioner Gabriel will participate in the #BeActiveNight and Sport Village in Sofia, Bulgaria.
