Honored person at the dinner was the professor of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Irvine, California, Dr. Kyriakos Athanasiou, whom the archbishop of America described as “a brilliant example of a reminder to the whole world of the talent, ingenuity and intelligence of the Greeks of Cyprus”. As he pointed out, “the much-loved Cypriot community in the United States is a strong part of the main body of Hellenism in the Diaspora, a brilliant part of our diaspora. In fact, just as Professor Athanasiou dedicated his entire life to alleviating the suffering of our fellow human beings, so too we all must dedicate, as we are dedicating, our lives in order for our Cyprus to be freed once and for all from suffering, for the which all of our hearts are pounding.”
Finally, Archbishop Elpidophoros expressed his gratitude for the profound honor of his invitation as honorary co-chairman of the event together with Mr. Anastasiadis. “This is the highest honor for me,” he noted.
