Protesters tried to vandalize the Iranian embassy building. The episodes were then moved to the area where the Islamic Center of England is housed.

Clashes between police and hundreds of protesters took place on Sunday in Londonas there were attempts to attack her embassy of Iran and Islamic centers on the occasion of it death of Mahsa Amini.

The death of the 22-year-old while in custody by the Iranian authorities for the way she wore her hijab has caused protests and incidents in Iran.

In an interview with Sky News, the victim’s cousin Erfan Mortezaei said that Mahsa was “tortured and humiliated” before her death.

According to Scotland Yard, the incidents began outside the Iranian embassy in west London, on the south side of Hyde Park, as protesters attempted to vandalize the building or enter it.

Shouting the slogan “Death to the Islamic Republic” they tried to break through the police cordon protecting the embassy. Several police officers were injured at this point, either from fighting with the protesters or from throwing objects, such as bottles and stones.

The episodes were then moved to the northeast corner of the park, at Marble Arch, and then to the Maida Vale area, where the Islamic Center of England. Clashes also occurred nearby Islamic Center of Kilburn.

From the episodes police officers were injured, five of whom are hospitalized with fractures or other injuries.

In total 12 protesters were arrested for violent disturbance of public order.

The Metropolitan Police has imposed a 48-hour ban on gatherings outside the Iranian embassy from Sunday evening.

Metropolitan Police Chief Constable Karen Findlay said: “We respect people’s right to protest peacefully and we always work with organizers to make this possible, but we will not tolerate unprovoked attacks on police officers like we saw today or demonstrations that make other communities not they feel safe.”

Meanwhile, Iran’s Foreign Ministry on Sunday summoned the UK’s ambassador to Tehran, Simon Sircliffe, to explain the “hostile atmosphere” that Tehran says has been created by media outlets for London’s Farsi-speaking community.
