Three Syrians who had taken refuge under a tree were killed by lightning in central Sofia, a spokeswoman for the disaster agency said tonight.

Another Syrian who was with them is hospitalized in serious condition. The victims were aged 20-30.

According to public radio BNR, a man was also injured by lightning in a public garden in the western suburbs of the Bulgarian capital.

About 800 lightning bolts struck Sofia within an hour, according to the meteorological service. The hail caused power outages and flooding in houses and underpasses.
