Fears of attacks on the European energy network after the Nord Stream sabotage

by

EU warns of “strong response” – Natural gas prices in Europe rose 12% during Tuesday trading on the London market to $1,950 per 1,000 cubic meters.

Fears of attacks on Europe’s energy grid are being voiced in European capitals after gas pipeline sabotage Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2. Analysts estimate that the sabotages are probably “warning shots” by Moscow, which has fallen into a desperate position on the Ukraine front, after Western support in Kyiv. It is noted that normally the pressure inside the pipeline equals 105 bar, while now it is only 7 bar in the German section.

The president of the Commission attributed the leaks in the Nord Stream 1 natural gas pipeline to sabotage Ursula von der Leyen, warning that there would be the “strongest possible response” in the event of attacks on Europe’s energy infrastructure.

“I spoke with Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen about the acts of sabotage on the Nord Stream pipelines,” Ms von der Leyen tweeted.

He added that it is now paramount to investigate the incidents to get full clarity on “the facts and why”.

“Any deliberate disruption to Europe’s energy infrastructure is unacceptable and will lead to the strongest possible response,” he warned.

Natural gas prices in Europe rose 12% during Tuesday’s trading on the London market to $1,950 per 1,000 cubic meters.

It is recalled that the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, which consists of two parallel lines capable of transporting 27.5 billion cubic meters per year each, began supplying gas directly from Russia to Germany in 2011. The operation of the pipeline Nord Stream 1 stopped altogether in early September, as Russia cited first a technical pump failure at a Russian compressor station and then Western sanctions, while Nord Stream 2 was not given the go-ahead at the last minute due to Russian sanctions.

The German government received the CIA tip over the summer, Spiegel reported, adding that Berlin suspects a targeted attack on the Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines. A German government spokesman declined to comment, Spiegel added.

What Ukraine, Poland and Denmark said

Unexplained leaks discovered in the Nord Stream gas pipelines in the Baltic Sea are the result of a “terrorist attack planned by Moscow”, Kyiv said without providing evidence, as Russia alleges sabotage.

“The large-scale gas leak in Nord Stream 1 is nothing more than a terrorist attack planned by Russia and an act of aggression against the European Union,” Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podoliak tweeted.

Poland said the leaks detected by Danish authorities were due to Russian provocation. “We are in a situation of high international pressure,” he said characteristically Polish Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Przydacz in Warsaw. “Unfortunately, our eastern neighbor is constantly following a policy of provocations,” he added.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, which is in the Polish town of Goleniów, near Stettin, for the inauguration of the Baltic Pap gas pipeline, confirmed to reporters that the leak points are close. Asked if it was sabotage, he said: “We can’t rule anything out, but it’s still too early to draw any conclusions.”

Moscow, for its part, said it was “extremely concerned” about the leaks. “It is an unprecedented situation,” said Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, who did not rule out sabotage. “No version can be ruled out.”
