Most of the Russian aircraft, along with conventional missile launchers, can also carry smaller, tactical nuclear weapons, the site notes
The United States, and allied intelligence agencies, are stepping up efforts to identify any Russian military movements that could indicate that Vladimir Putin ordered the use of nukes arms to Ukraine, according to five current and former US officials cited by Politico.
“However, any signs that the unpredictable Russian leader has decided to unleash the unthinkable – in a desperate attempt to regain the initiative or bully the international community into complying with his demands – they could come too late” officials warned.
Most of the Russian aircraft, along with conventional missile launchers, can also carry smaller, tactical nuclear weapons. These weapons are designed for more targeted use on the battlefield than strategic weapons such as intercontinental ballistic missiles, which leave traces when their units are alerted or used in training exercises.
“This means that unless Putin or his commanders want the world to know about it (a nuclear strike) in advance, the U.S. they may never know that Russian forces have swapped conventional munitions for atomic bombs,” comments Politico.
It’s an increasingly vexing problem as Russian forces struggle to regain momentum in Ukraine and signs mount that Putin is increasingly unpopular at home, especially after ordering partial conscription last week.
“We are watching more closely,” said a US official with access to information about Moscow’s nuclear forces and strategy, who spoke on condition of anonymity.
Efforts to monitor Russian military activity include air, space and cyberspace — and a greater emphasis on commercial satellites to analyze Russian units in the field that may be able to receive nuclear orders, the official said.
Outside Ukraine, efforts are also focused on the Russian enclave of Kaliningradlocated between Poland and Lithuania, where the Kremlin has installed weapons systems and hypersonic missiles.
