Moscow-Taliban deal: will send them fuel, natural gas and wheat

by

The agreement with Russia is essentially the first – known – international economic agreement concluded by the Taliban since they were allowed to take power in Afghanistan.

Moscow has reached a temporary agreement with the Taliban government in Afghanistan to export fuel, gas and wheat, according to an exclusive Reuters report.

According to the Afghan Minister of Commerce, Haji Nooruddin Azizi, “the Taliban government was working to diversify its trading partners and that Russia had offered a discount to average world commodity prices».

The agreement provides for the supply of approximately one million tons of gasoline, one million tons of diesel, 500,000 tons of liquefied gas and two million tons of wheat from Russia annually.

The West and many other countries do not recognize the Taliban government and have cut them off from the global banking system.

Moscow does not officially recognize the Taliban government, but hosted the movement’s leaders before the fall of Kabul. Also, the Russian embassy is one of the few that remains open in the Afghan capital.

The deal with Russia is essentially the first known major international economic deal struck by the Taliban since they were allowed to take power in Afghanistan more than a year ago.

This trade deal with Russia could help ease the isolation of the extremist Islamist movement.
