The US Coast Guard has launched a search for the location 23 immigrants who are missing after the ship they were on sank off the coast of Florida shortly before the powerful hurricane Jan.

“Four Cuban immigrants swam to shore after the boat capsized due to bad weather. The Coast Guard has launched an investigation into the rescue of 23 people,” Miami Border Patrol Chief Walter Schlossar said on Twitter.

Around 18:00 (Greece time) Hurricane Ian was located about 80 kilometers southwest of Punta Gorda, accompanied by winds blowing with speed of 250 km (155 miles) per hour, according to the US National Hurricane Center (NHC).

Forecasters predict it will weaken as it makes landfall and expect it to hit the county Charlesnorth of Fort Myers.

Authorities have warned residents that it is now too late to leave the area.

In Venice, a seaside town of 24,000 between Tampa and Fort Myers, it had already started raining since midday. Many roads were flooded and the wind bent palm trees at a 45-degree angle, uprooting advertising and road signs.

More than 200,000 homes and businesses are already without power in Florida, and Gov. Ron DeSandis said “this is just a drop in the ocean of what’s going to happen in the next 24-48 hours.”
