“The damage to the Nordstream 1 and Nordstream 2 pipelines in international waters in the Baltic Sea is of deep concern”
He addresses a warning to Russia, without naming it, in today’s announcement NATOspeaking of a “decisive response to hybrid tactics by state and non-state actors”.
“Any deliberate attack on Allied vital infrastructure would be met with unified and decisive responses,” it said.
The NATO announcement
- The damage to the Nordstream 1 and Nordstream 2 pipelines in international waters in the Baltic Sea is of deep concern. All currently available information indicates that this is the result of deliberate, reckless and irresponsible acts of sabotage. These spills cause shipping hazards and significant environmental damage. We support the investigations being conducted to determine the origin of the damage.
- We, as Allies, are committed to prepare, prevent and defend against the coercive use of energy (tooling) and other hybrid tactics by state and non-state actors. Any deliberate attack on Allied vital infrastructure would be met with united and decisive responses.
However, Russia’s Foreign Ministry said today that the cracks in the Nord Stream pipelines that run through the bottom of the Baltic Sea between Russia and Germany and that caused gas leaks off the coasts of Denmark and Sweden occurred in an area located “fully under control” of US intelligence.
Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova told a media briefing in the Kremlin that Washington has “full control over the waters around Denmark and Sweden” where four leaks were detected in the Nord Stream 1 and Nord Stream 2 pipelines.
Fourth leak in the Nord Stream natural gas pipelines was detected earlier this week by the Swedish Coast Guard, as reported by a Swedish newspaper.
“The Swedish newspaper Svenska Dagbladet cites the country’s Coast Guard, which says it detected the leak after damage to two pipelines stretching from Russia to Germany in a total of three places on Monday” it is emphasized.
