Disobedient Germans: Households and small businesses do not reduce gas consumption

by

“Without significant savings – and in the private sector – even as the temperature continues to fall, it will be difficult to avoid gas shortages in the winter,” warns the head of the Federal Network Agency

The consumption natural gas from households and businesses was in the last week “significantly above the average consumption of previous years”, says the head of the Federal Network Agency Klaus Müller and speaks of a “disappointing situation”.

“Without significant savings – also in the private sector – even as long as the temperature continues to fall, it will be difficult to avoid gas shortages in the winter,” warns Mr Müller in statements to Handelsblatt. The head of the regulatory authority points out, however, that Germany, given the fullness of its warehouses, which has exceeded 91%, could go through the winter smoothly, under three conditions: the projects that have been started to increase imports are implemented of natural gas, to keep the supply of natural gas from neighboring countries stable and to economize on consumption, even if we have a colder winter. “It depends on each of us individually,” he said.

Due to the lack of its own terminals, Germany has so far only been supplied with liquefied natural gas (LNG) via terminals in Belgium and the Netherlands. Germany’s first two LNG terminals, so-called Floating Storage and Regasification Units (FSRUs) could be commissioned as early as winter.

According to the regulator, natural gas consumption by households and businesses was by mid-September in some cases well below the average consumption of previous years. Last week however, with significantly lower temperatures than the corresponding week of previous years, consumption reached 483 GWh, 14.5% above the average value of 422 GWh for the years 2018-2021.

“Savings must be achieved regardless of the temperatures”, the authority emphasizes and sets a limit of 20%, in order to avoid a shortage of natural gas. Private households and smaller businesses account for 40% of the country’s total natural gas consumption and use it mainly for heating. Large customers, who consume the remaining 60%, reduced their consumption by 22% in August, while with 1170 GWh last week they were well below the 1679 GWh of previous years.
