Russia: Political opponent of Putin leaves the country

Russian opposition politician Leonid Gozman, who was released last night from a detention center where he had been held for 30 days, is leaving Russia, Russian online media reported today. “I’m glad they let me. His daughter Olga Gozman told the radio station Svoboda (Radio Liberty) that her father is leaving for Israel via Turkey.

Leonid Gozman had left Russia after the start of the war against Ukraine, but later returned. He had declared at the time that it was a “moral choice”. In May, Guzmán was included in the “Media – foreign agents” registry. In July, he and his wife were prosecuted for failing to declare to the authorities that they hold dual citizenship.

In late August, Gozban was sentenced to 15 days in prison for a 2020 Facebook post in which he said Joseph Stalin was worse than Hitler and the NKVD worse than the SS.

After serving his sentence, he was re-arrested as soon as he was released from the detention center. The politician was sentenced to 15 days in prison for a post he made in 2013 in Live journal in which he said that Stalin’s secret services SMERSH and NKVD were no better than the Gestapo and the SS.
