At least 23 people were killed and 35 injured in a Russian missile attack that hit a convoy carrying civilians near the southern Ukrainian city of Zaporizhia.

According to reports on Twitter, the missile hit Ukrainian civilians trying to flee the region, which is now annexed by Russia, in a grand ceremony in Moscow under the watchful eye of Putin.

According to Nexta, several civilians were waiting to cross into the occupied section to pick up relatives and deliver humanitarian aid.

A Reuters witness saw about 12 bodies, four of them in cars, and said a missile left a crater in the ground near two rows of vehicles at a car market.

“So far, 23 dead and 28 injured. All civilians,” Oleksandr Starukh, regional governor of Zaporizhia, wrote earlier on Telegram.

The explosion broke the windows of the vehicles – mainly cars and three vans.

The vehicles were filled with the occupants’ belongings, blankets and suitcases. A body leaned from the driver’s seat to the passenger’s seat of a yellow car, his left hand still gripping the steering wheel.

Russia, which invaded Ukraine on February 24 in what it calls a special military operation, denies that it deliberately targeted civilians, although its attacks have devastated Ukrainian towns and cities.
