Anger has been sparked by the death of 7-year-old Rayyan Suleiman who was returning home from school with his classmates when Israeli soldiers started chasing them and “died on the spot from his fear”.

A young Palestinian boy died of cardiac arrest after being chased by Israeli soldiers in the occupied West Bank on Thursday, his father said, with the army rejecting that version.

7-year-old Rayyan Suleiman was returning home from school with his classmates in the village of Tuku, near Bethlehem, when Israeli soldiers started chasing them and “died on the spot from his fear,” Yasser’s father said in a video posted on social media.

A medical examiner who examined the boy said there were no signs of injuries and added that his death appeared to be due to cardiac arrest.

The Palestinian Foreign Ministry condemned the incident, calling it a “horrific crime” by Israel, while the US expressed its sadness at the incident and called for an investigation.

Israel denies the accusations.

An Israeli army spokesman said troops in the area at the time of the incident were searching for Palestinians who allegedly fled the village after throwing stones at drivers.

“Initial investigation has shown that there is no connection between the searches conducted by the Israeli armed forces in the area and the tragic death of the child,” he added.

Meanwhile, local Palestinian media reported that the Israeli army raided the boy’s home after his death.

In Washington, Deputy State Department spokesman Vedant Patel said that “the United States is shocked by the death of an innocent Palestinian child.”

“We support a thorough and immediate investigation into the circumstances surrounding the child’s death” alongside the Israeli military’s investigation, he added.
