Today Ukraine submitted an application for fast-track accession to NATO, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said minutes after formalizing the annexation of four Ukrainian regions.

“We are taking a decisive step by signing Ukraine’s candidacy for accelerated NATO membership,” he said in a message posted on social media.

“De facto we have already run our course in NATO. De facto we have already demonstrated compatibility with the North Atlantic Alliance specifications. (The specifications) these are realistic for Ukraine, they are realistic on the battlefield and in all aspects of our cooperation. We trust each other, we stand up for each other. This is the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. De facto. Today Ukraine will submit a request to do this De jure. According to the procedure, which will correspond to our role in defending the entire alliance. In rapid accession. We are taking our own concrete step by signing Ukraine’s request for fast-track NATO membership,” the Ukrainian president said.

Shortly afterwards, Ukrainian Prime Minister Denis Smykhal confirmed that he, President Volodymyr Zelensky and the Speaker of the Parliament signed an official application for Ukraine’s fast-track NATO membership.

Zelensky announced that the meeting of the National Security and Defense Council was completed in Ukraine. He said that Ukraine is “leading efforts for talks”, but with Russian President Vladimir Putin it is impossible to reach an agreement on “coexistence on equal, honest, decent and fair terms”.

“Only the path of strengthening and expelling the occupiers from all our lands restores peace. We will pass this path… We must legally enshrine everything we have achieved in reality. In Ukraine in particular the fate of democracy is decided in its confrontation with tyranny”, underlined the president of Ukraine.

Nationalization of Russian assets

Ukraine’s government plans to nationalize all Russian assets on the country’s territory, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelesnyi said in a speech.

“At the next meeting of the Verkhovna Rada (parliament) of Ukraine, the bill on the nationalization of all Russian assets will be discussed, which will simplify this process. I ask you to support this bill without hesitation. We are completing the dismantling of Russian influence in Ukraine, Europe and the world,” the Ukrainian president said.

Since the beginning of the Russian invasion, Ukraine has been confiscating and freezing the assets of natural and legal persons on its territory. In July, for example, a court in the Kirovograd region seized the assets of four Russians, the value of which exceeded 200 million dollars. The court found that the Russians had business rights in three related companies. All three had committed acts of money laundering from illegal activities. The names of the Russians are not mentioned.
