The annexation of the 4 Ukrainian regions by Russia is a “violation of international law”, said the NATO Secretary-General. Kyiv, he stressed, has the right to reoccupy them

The West en masse condemns “referendums” and does not recognize them annexation of Ukrainian territories by Russia.

As stated by the Secretary General of NATO Jens Stoltenberg Russia’s annexation of 4 Ukrainian regions is a “violation of international law” and constitutes the most serious escalation of the conflict since Moscow invaded Ukraine.

“This land grab is illegal,” he stressed. “The Allies in NATO they do not and will not recognize these lands as part of Russia. We call on all countries to reject Russia’s blatant attempts at territorial conquest. These lands are Ukrainian,” he added.

“Putin has mobilized hundreds of thousands of troops, is issuing irresponsible nuclear threats and is now illegally annexing more Ukrainian territory. Stoltenberg said.

Stoltenberg recalled that NATO is not part of the conflict but he reiterated that he unwaveringly supports the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine and will continue to support the country as it defends itself against Russia. “Ukraine has the right to retake by force these occupied territories and we will support her to continue to liberate these territories”, he said characteristically. “These areas are Ukraine, just like Crimea (which was annexed by Russia in 2014) is Ukraine,” he continued.

Referring to accession of Ukraine to NATO, said the Allies support her right to choose which path to take. “Every democracy in Europe has the right to ask to join NATO and we have said time and time again that the door remains openhe stated. But he reminded that the decision should adopted unanimously by all 30 members of the Pact.

Stoltenberg also assured that the allies would defend strategic infrastructure following the sabotage of the Nord Stream 1 and 2 gas pipelines in the Baltic off the Danish island of Bornholm. “Alliance ships and planes are in the area and are gathering useful information for the ongoing investigation to find out who is behind these attacks,” he said.

Finally, he will meet tomorrow Saturday with the Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen at the NATO headquarters in Brussels.
