At least 19 peopleincluding a colonel of the Revolutionary Guards were killed today in riots in the province Sistan-BaluchistanIran’s state television reported.
According to this source, the head of the Guards’ intelligence service in that province, Colonel Ali Mousavi, was killed in this “incident,” as Sistan-Baluchistan’s governor, Hossein Hibani, called it.
Hiabani also told television that the dead totaled 19 and the injured 20.
Earlier, Iranian authorities announced that they had arrested many foreigners who, according to Tehran, are connected to the protest movement that broke out in the country over the death of Mahsha Amini who was arrested by the moral police.
At least 83 people have been killed in the protests over the past two weeks. The authorities, who deny that the police forces are responsible for the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini, call the protesters “riots” and have announced hundreds of arrests.
The Ministry of Information announced that it arrested “nine nationals of Germany, Poland, Italy, France, the Netherlands, Sweden” and other countries “at the scene of the riots, in which they were involved.”
Since the beginning of the protests, Tehran has accused “foreign powers” and particularly the US of organizing or inciting the protests.
Iran International, an Iranian-language television channel based in London, aired several videos today purporting to show the crackdown on the protests. Agence France-Presse said it was unable to confirm their authenticity. “Death to the dictator” shout women who don’t wear headscarves in the city of Ardabil, in one of the videos. In Awaz, security forces fire tear gas to disperse a gathering of hundreds of people shouting anti-government slogans.
