Nicaragua severed diplomatic relations with the Netherlands yesterday, Friday, according to a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of this Central American country.

The Nicaraguan government took this decision because the “interventionist and neo-colonial” European country “insulted and continues to insult Nicaraguan families,” the statement said.

Earlier this week, Nicaraguan officials branded the European Union ambassador an “undesirable person” and also said the country would not accept the new US ambassador, fueling tensions between President Daniel Ortega and the international community.

Ortega had also stated last night that he “no longer wants relations with the interventionist government” of the Netherlands, after the announcement by the Dutch ambassador that her country would not finance the construction of a hospital, which it was going to finance as part of the cooperation of the two countries.

“Out!” Ortega exclaimed, referring to Dutch ambassador Christine Piren, who is accredited to the government of Managua but is based in Costa Rica. The ambassador had met the Nicaraguan Foreign Minister Denis Moncada on Thursday to inform him of her government’s decision. Yesterday, Friday, he returned to Costa Rica.
