Iranian authorities, who deny any involvement of security forces in Amini’s death, have arrested hundreds of protesters

Demonstrations are due to take place in dozens of cities around the world today in solidarity with the protest movement in Iran that has erupted following the death of Mahsha Amini following her arrest by morality police.

The protests in Iran, whose crackdown has claimed the lives of at least 83 people, began after the September 16 death of a 22-year-old Kurdish woman, three days after she was arrested for not wearing her headscarf properly.

Iranian authorities, who deny any involvement of security forces in Amini’s death, have arrested hundreds of protesters.

Solidarity rallies involving the Iranian diaspora are scheduled to take place today in more than 150 cities around the world, from Tokyo to San Francisco and London.

“Be our voice”

Protesters chanted “be our voice” in Brisbane, Australia, where organizers said thousands of Iranian-Australians called on the international community to support them in their fight for freedom.

In Tokyo, demonstrators held Amini’s photo, but also banners that read “We’ll not stop”.

“The time has come for Iran’s leaders to heed this international call and end the violence against their people,” US envoy to Iran Robert Maley said on Twitter.

For the 15th night last Friday, Iranians took to the streets of the city of Sakez, in the Kurdistan province where Amini came from, according to images broadcast by the non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights based in Oslo.

“Women, life, freedom,” shouted a group of men and women in a street, repeating one of the main slogans of the movement.

Since the beginning of the mobilizations, NGOs have been complaining about the repression by the security forces and the arrests. According to the Fars news agency, around 60 people have been killed since September 16, while Iran Human Rights says at least 83.

An official count says more than 1,200 protesters have been arrested, including lawyers, journalists and activists.

In Tehran, several members of the riot police unit have taken up positions at various crossroads in the Iranian capital today, according to eyewitnesses.

In addition, information is circulating about demonstrations at the university demanding the release of students who have been arrested. The 1500tasvir network posted video on social media showing large protests unfolding at universities in Tehran, Mashhad and Kermanshah.
