It was June 2021 when, in the 43rd minute, the then 29-year-old Danish footballer Christian Eriksen collapsed on the pitch during the Euro 2020 match against Finland. The stands and viewers around the world froze at the sight of the unconscious Eriksen.

Today, one year later, the famous Danish football star managed to emerge victorious from his health adventure and is back in the Premier League.

Christian Eriksen’s attending cardiologist, Dr. Sharma Sanjay, Professor of Cardiology at the University of London, speaks exclusively to Corina Georgiou and the show “Dekatianoi” about how he was finally saved from almost certain death.

June 2021. We all watch in shock as Christian Eriksen collapses on the pitch during a soccer match. We see him remain motionless for quite some time. We would like you to tell us what saved him in the end. Is this a miracle?

What happened to him was a sudden heart attack, a terrible situation for someone and what saved him was the excellent response of the emergency team on the field.

These are doctors and paramedics who realized something serious was going on, something was wrong. He had collapsed without any contact. When an athlete falls to the ground without making contact, it is a very serious matter. They immediately realized he had no pulse and immediately started CPR and “shocked” him to get him out of this fatal rhythm.

So he only needed a “shock” and he was back in five minutes. I believe it is this speed that saved him, because for every minute he was lost, his chances of survival would decrease by about 70%.

Since then he has been monitored, trained step by step and during training sessions over a period of four to five months and as the level of difficulty increased we did not notice any serious arrhythmias and of course then he played in the Premier League during which he was monitored very closely and now he is playing for United is still being monitored, so the situation is stable at this time.

What did he say to you personally after this incident?

He was very positive about the fact that he wanted to play. We had a very frank discussion within the team and all members of the team about how we could mitigate the risk by making sure that he was fitted with a device that worked well and that we put other measures in place on the field, such as early of the defibrillator if something goes wrong with his health in the future.

As you can see he remains extremely healthy and has excelled in the Premier League. If you look at the research I’ve done, one in 300 young athletes have a heart condition that could kill them.
