Nelson de Sá: ‘The world is watching’ the ‘historic’ election in Brazil

by

External coverage arrived on Sunday, the 2nd, treating the Brazilian election as “historic” in the statements, from the American agency Associated Press to the South China Morning Post, due to the confrontation between Lula and Jair Bolsonaro.

In the New York Times, “Bolsonaro vs Lula: Brazil faces radically opposing options in disruptive elections” or, even, “A choice between two heavyweights”. In the Washington Post, “Brazil faces crucial decision: More Bolsonaro or return to Lula?”.

On the Guancha portal in Shanghai, “The world is watching Brazil’s election: Tropical Trump vs. one of Latin America’s most respected leftists.”

In French Le Monde, the weekend’s print headline was, “In Brazil, a crucial vote for the country and the climate” (above). And online headline Sunday morning, “Lula wants to reorient diplomacy by affirming centrality of the climate emergency.”

The Spanish El País and the British The Times, The Guardian and Financial Times focus on the “comeback kid” Lula, who can return “through the front door”. And the American Wall Street Journal criticized Lula in an editorial, arguing that “the country deserves a contrast of views” with Bolsonaro, in the second round.

German news outlet Tagesschau on the ARD network and the Indian Express warn that the election is a “stress test for democracy” and that “there are great concerns about the loss of faith in the institutions and principles of democracy”. Even in the Spanish rightist El Mundo, “Brazil decides its course in the midst of a ‘democratic emergency'”.

On the other hand, the website of the American Fox News highlights that “A victory for the left in Brazil’s election could be the salvation that Cuba and Venezuela need right now.”
