The implementation of the Northern Road Axis of Crete (BOAK) is in the final stretch, as it gave the “green light” for the Chania – Heraklion section of the highway.
As stressed by Deputy Minister of Infrastructure George Karagiannis on “Crete TV”, the Regional Council gave a positive opinion for the largest part of VOAK, Chania – Heraklion, 157km long. and will soon have the project and environmental licensing from the Ministry of Environment. This paves the way for the implementation of the largest highway to be built in Greece and one of the largest in Europe.
According to Mr. Karagiannis, in 2022 the contracts are signed and the first construction sites are set up in the departments:
- “Hersonissos-Neapoli” 22.5 km long, with a budget of 290 million euros. The project is implemented through PPPs.
- “Neapoli-Ag. Nikolaos “14km long, with a budget of 147 million euros. This is a Public Project which is financed through the Recovery Fund.
- “It is the first and only time that a unified layout is presented for VOAK and Crete will acquire a highway that it deserves,” said the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure.
In fact, he noted that there will be an improvement of a large part of the side network to ensure the movement of citizens and visitors to the island.
Mr. Karagiannis made special reference to road safety, noting that in Crete most fatal traffic accidents are recorded. He underlined the importance that the government of Kyriakos Mitsotakis attaches to the issues of road safety and in this direction projects of a budget of 20 million euros are being executed or auctioned.
“Crete will star in Greece and the wider region”
Mr. Karagiannis also referred to the projects worth more than 3 billion euros implemented by the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport in Crete.
Mr. Karagiannis’s reference was extensive to the developments that exist at the airport in Kastelli, but also to the development plans of the “Kazantzakis” airport.
Especially for Kastelli, he assured that the project is going very well. “This is a difficult project, which will change the image of Crete,” he noted.
Regarding the utilization of the “Kazantzakis” airport, the Deputy Minister of Infrastructure stated that “we will not allow it to become a new Greek, as the Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis has said. We will work to present a plan that will upgrade the whole of Heraklion “. He noted that “the project is complex, but there is a plan and intention.”
Complete and coherent project plan
The dams are also on the front of the big projects. Mr. Karagiannis referred to:
- Tavronitis Dam, where in the first half of 2022 the PPP tender will be announced.
- Platy Dam, which will be auctioned in 2022.
- Bramianou Dam, a complex project that will be auctioned in the first half of 2022.
- Regarding the building projects, Mr. Karagiannis stressed that the Ministry of Infrastructure and Transport is ready to proceed with the construction of the cluster of Court Houses of Crete in Heraklion and Chania and the reconstruction of the Rethymnon Courthouse.
The Deputy Minister of Infrastructure stressed that: “Our interventions in Crete are comprehensive. We prefer to say fewer words and move forward with actions “and added that” with the package of projects of 3 billion euros that we are implementing, Crete will have the opportunity to play a leading role not only in Greece but in the wider region. “
