Negative response from the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom on the possibility of the return of the Parthenon Sculptures
London, Thanasis Gavos
Liz Truss appeared negative in her first public statement regarding the prospect of their reunion Sculptors of the Parthenon in Athens.
As part of the interviews she gave to British television stations on Tuesday from the Tory conference in Birmingham, the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom was asked by GB News whether she thinks the Sculptures should be returned from the British Museum.
The channel’s political editor pointed to the recent statement by London Museum Chairman George Osborne that a “deal” could be reached.
Ms. Truss’s short answer was: “I don’t support that.”
It is recalled that the Sunday Times hosted an interview with the Greek Prime Minister Kyriakou Mitsotakis in which he mentioned that he will raise the issue of the Glyptos to his counterpart when they probably meet in London at the end of November. Mr. Mitsotakis had estimated that the climate in the UK is “changing” and that the return of the Sculptors would be a “fantastic gesture”.
