Another six Palestinians, including two journalists, were injured by Israeli fire, while dozens more were hospitalized with respiratory problems
Israeli soldiers killed one 21 year old Palestinian during clashes that broke out today in the occupied West Bank, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced. Another six Palestinians, including two journalists, were injured by Israeli fire, while dozens more were hospitalized with respiratory problems due to the tear gas being fired.
Clashes erupted when Israeli forces surrounded the home of Salman Amran, a 35-year-old alleged Hamas member, in the community of Deir al-Khattab (east of Nablus).
According to a statement from the Israeli army, the 35-year-old man rolled over and opened fire on the soldiers who surrounded his house. In an audio message shared on social media, Amran was calling fellow competitors for help.
Eyewitnesses reported that dozens of armed Palestinians rushed to the scene and a fierce exchange of fire followed.
In a video that saw the light of day, the 35-year-old Palestinian can be seen being arrested by Israeli soldiers after a long-hour battle. His uncle, Basim Amran, told Reuters he convinced his nephew to surrender after Israeli forces tried to bulldoze the house.
The Palestinian Ministry of Health reported that 21-year-old Alaa Zagal was killed by a bullet to the head while he was away from the scene of the fighting. Instead, the Israeli military said the victim was killed in an exchange of fire.
In recent months, Israeli forces have stepped up operations in the West Bank following a series of Palestinian attacks on Israelis – leaving 19 dead – and as the Nov. 1 elections approach.
More than 80 Palestinians, armed and civilian, have been killed since January in the West Bank, with the European Commission pointing out that this year is the year with the most casualties since 2008.
