Sixty-six clinics stopped performing abortions in the US after decision of the Supreme Court of the country which held that the Constitution it does not guarantee women’s right to abortion.
According to a Guttmacher Institute study released today, in the first 100 days after the Court’s historic decision, 13 States banned abortion completely and two others, Wisconsin and Georgia, imposed drastic restrictions on the practice. In those 15 states, which together had 79 abortion clinics, 26 closed completely – including Mississippi, which overturned the landmark Roe v. Wade decision in 1973. Forty clinics stopped performing abortions. , but continue to provide other types of medical services, added the institute, which fights for women’s access to contraception and abortion around the world.
The 13 clinics that still perform abortions are all located in Georgia, where abortion remains legalbut only during the first six weeks of pregnancy.
In the 14 states that no longer have any clinics (including Texas, Missouri, Louisiana, and Arizona), more than 125,000 abortions were performed in 2020. In Georgia alone there were 41,000.
About 22 million women of reproductive age live in these States, or 29% of American women in this age group. Now, these women “will have to travel to other States to get an abortion (while also bearing the direct or indirect costs of transportation, babysitting their other children, and time off work), get an abortion on their own or to continue the pregnancy,” the study authors report.
The closure of these clinics also resulted in abortion clinics in other states being “overwhelmed” with requests, reaching the limits of their capabilities. The situation will “continue to deteriorate”, writes the institute, as well as other states, such as Indiana, Ohio or South Carolina, are promoting laws to ban abortions, but these have been temporarily blocked by the courts. Ultimately, 26 of the 50 states are expected to ban abortion entirely or drastically restrict it.
