Panel SA: Unionists want to take cases of companies that threaten to cut if Lula wins to the ILO

by

After raising new cases of electoral harassment in recent days, the union centrals intend to take the problem to the ILO (International Labor Organization).

This week Força Sindical filed representations in the TSE (Superior Labor Court) and in the Public Ministry of Labor against two companies in Rio Grande do Sul that sent communiqués to suppliers informing that they will cut their business in case of Lula’s victory. There are other cases under investigation.

“We are centralizing these complaints in the Public Ministry and the TSE, because it is an electoral crime, but we are also going to make representations at the ILO. We have to show the world the absurdities that are happening”, said Miguel Torres, president of Força Sindical.

Coercion or harassment to influence the vote can be framed in article 301 of the Electoral Code. The legislation provides for a penalty of up to four years of imprisonment and payment of a fine for anyone who “uses violence or serious threats to coerce someone to vote, or not to vote, for a particular candidate or party.”

One of the companies that sent a statement of the kind, on Monday (3), is Stara Indústria de Implementos Agrícolas, from Rio Grande do Sul, which has among the donor partners of Bolsonaro’s campaigns and his allies.

Another example is that of Concrevali, from Paraná, who threatened to fire 30% of its employees if Lula emerges victorious in the 2nd round.
