Indian authorities have so far found 26 bodies and searches have been suspended due to bad weather
Three days after an avalanche swept away a group of climbers in the Himalayas, hopes of finding survivors are fading: the Indian authorities have so far identified 26 corpses and searches were suspended due to bad weather.
The victims are 24 apprentice climbers and both their instructors, as announced by the Nehru Institute of Mountaineering. If the weather conditions improve, the search will resume tomorrow, Saturday.
Sunil Laluani, one of the 32 rescued, praised the trainers for their composure after he said they saved many lives. “We were about 50-100 meters from the top, with the trainers in front of us, when suddenly an avalanche swept everyone away. It happened within seconds and we were in a crevasse (in the glacier). We somehow managed to catch our breath (…) Thanks to them (the trainers) we are alive today,” he told the Hindustan Times newspaper.
The climbers were swept away by the avalanche near the summit of Mount Draupadi and Dada-2, at an altitude of 4,880 meters, in the northern Indian state of Uttarakhand.
Among the dead are the well-known mountaineer Savita Kanswal, who joined the team as a trainer. A few months ago Kansual summited Everest and neighboring Mt Makulu in just 16 days, a record in the women’s category.
