All the necessary diplomatic representations are being made to the UN, to the EU, so that everyone realizes that there can be no further tolerance of the unacceptable Turkish methods, said the President of the Republic of Cyprus Nikos Anastasiadis.

President Anastasiades gave his statements to journalists, attending an event in Astromeritis, in the context of the 42nd anti-occupation march of Morphou.

In response to a journalist’s observation that we have been following in recent days some requests from the Turkish Cypriot side for the indirect recognition of a pseudo-state and when asked what actions the Government is taking in relation to this matter, he said that “all the necessary diplomatic representations are being made to the UN, to the EU, for everyone to realize that there can be no further tolerance of the unacceptable Turkish methods, which are nothing more than the foundation or “cementing”, if you will, of the achievements that Turkey is seeking.
There is no question from our side of choosing the path of armed confrontation, I should make it clear, we are not a warmongering people. On the contrary, with our proposals we try in every way to convey the message that through a creative dialogue, always within the framework of international law and especially the European acquis, a solution can be found that will benefit Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, and not only that, but also Turkey”.

Asked if he would respond to the Tatar counter-proposals, the President said that “I am not prepared to contribute to what Mr. Tatar is seeking. I submitted some substantial proposals for confidence-building measures, which would build trust between the two parties and prepare the ground for a new creative dialogue. Unfortunately, Mr. Tatar’s counter-proposals are only intended to debate how to base their pursuit of two states. Therefore, I am not willing to contribute in this direction.”

Asked to report the content of his brief conversation with Mr. Erdogan on the sidelines of the European Political Community Meeting in Prague, the President said that “out of shame, I was sitting with other European partners, friends, I greeted the others, it was not possible to do not greet him. Within the context of culture we greeted each other, shook hands. I thought it good to mention the need to finally have a meaningful dialogue, that the time has come, instead of threats, instead of creating fait accompli, to create the prospects of a solution to the Cyprus problem that will open the way for Turkey in terms of, if it has, European orientations”.

Asked if he believes that after the elections in Turkey we will talk with another Turkey, the President said that “you will allow me to avoid predictions. I am watching what is happening inside Turkey, unfortunately it is not only Mr. Erdogan who puts forward the unacceptable claims, but unfortunately we see them being adopted by the opposition parties as well. Therefore, it is unpredictable.

What is required is for Turkey to realize that it cannot avoid costs when it threatens European countries, such as openly and without any reason to Greece, (for) the Greek islands, when it violates the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus to the detriment of the Turkish Cypriots as well, when they take the actions they take in Famagusta or for their continued intransigent behavior towards any international law. The claim that he is seeking a friendly settlement between neighboring countries based on international law is contradicted by the very actions he is taking.”
