The collective We All held a rally in Paris on Sunday to denounce the 101 femicides in France since the beginning of the year and to call on the government to do more to tackle violence against women.

Dressed in black and wearing a purple veil over their faces in mourning, 101 women lined up in silence in Pantheon Square in the center of the city, each holding a card with the name and age of the victims.

On placards placed on the ground between them, the women had written slogans such as “We want to stay alive” and “Love does not mean killing.”

“We have October 9 and 101 women were murdered by men because they were women, we don’t want to count any more deaths,” Yuna Mirai, on behalf of the collective, told reporters.

“We are urgently asking for accommodation places to be created for women and their children who need a safe haven,” he added, claiming that 213,000 women are at risk in France.

The number of femicides increased by 20% in 2021 in France, compared to the previous year: 122 women were murdered by their partner or ex-partner, according to a tally announced at the end of August by the interior ministry. In 2020, femicides rose to 102, while in 2019 they jumped to 146. It is unknown what and if the quarantine periods played a role in this increase.
