Anambra is among the 29 out of the 36 States in Nigeria to experience widespread flooding this year.
The death toll from a shipwreck in south-eastern Nigeria’s Anambra state has reached 76, the country’s president announced on Sunday evening.
The boat sank on Friday in the flood-hit Ogbaru area.
Nigerian President Muhammadu Buhari said in a tweet that authorities were still trying to locate and rescue the missing passengers. He added that he instructed the relevant agencies to review safety protocols to avoid similar accidents in the future.
Anambra’s head of emergency management said 15 people had been rescued alive by Saturday night.
Anambra is among the 29 out of the 36 States in Nigeria to experience widespread flooding this year. The waters washed away houses and destroyed crops and roads. Flood victims number at least half a million.
A resident of the area, Afam Oghene, told Reuters that because the main road linking eight communities to the rest of the state had been destroyed by floods, some were forced to travel by boats. The one that sank could have carried more than 100 people but its engine broke down and it was swept away by the waves.
