Former Chancellor Angela Merkel was honored today by the UN for her contribution to the 2015 refugee crisis.

In a special ceremony held in Geneva, Merkel received this year’s “Nansen” prize, awarded by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

“By helping more than a million refugees to survive and rebuild their lives, Angela Merkel has shown extraordinary moral and political courage,” said the head of the High Commission, Filippo Grandi, presenting the award, noting at the same time the reactions that the then chancellor from her own party.

She dedicated the award to the thousands of volunteers who welcomed the refugees who arrived in Germany in 2015.

“From my perspective, today’s honor goes mainly to the countless people who contributed back then in whatever way they could. Thanks to them we were able to manage the situation, thanks to them we succeeded”, emphasized the former chancellor and repeated that “no refugee should be sent back to his country if he is threatened with persecution there – the rights of refugees must be respected” .

For 2022, UNHCR also regionally honored the Mbera Fire Brigade volunteer firefighting team from refugees in Mauritania, in America Vincenta Gonzalez for 50 years of service to displaced people, in Asia and the Pacific the humanitarian organization Meikswe Myanmar and in North Africa and Middle East Iraqi gynecologist Nagham Hassan, who provides medical and psychosocial care to Yazidi girls and women in northern Iraq.
