King Charles III will be crowned on May 6, 2023, at Westminster Abbey in London, following a centuries-old tradition. The date, a Saturday, was confirmed by the British monarchy on Tuesday (11).

Queen Elizabeth II’s eldest son, Charles, 73, took the throne on the death of his mother on September 8. Elizabeth’s coronation was also held months after her accession.

“The coronation will reflect the monarch’s role today and look to the future, while maintaining the long-standing roots of tradition and pomp,” the Palace said in a statement. The ceremony is also a religious event, which will be led by the Archbishop of Canterbury, the spiritual leader of the Anglican Church.

Kings and queens of England — and later of Great Britain and the United Kingdom — have been crowned at Westminster Abbey since William the Conqueror in 1066. Charles will be the 41st monarch in this lineage.

According to reports in the British press, Charles intends to reduce some of the usual grandeur around the coronation, knowing that the ceremony will take place at a time when the country is facing a crisis, whose main impact is a rise in the cost of living of the population.

The palace said it will retain the central elements of the event, “recognizing the spirit of our times”.

Elizabeth’s coronation, on June 2, 1953, was the first to be broadcast on TV, considered a milestone in the modernization of the monarchy – a move that her husband, Prince Philip, would have strongly defended.
