Officials from more than 50 countries will meet on the sidelines of a NATO summit in Brussels today to discuss the strengthening of anti-aircraft defense of Ukraine, following two days of Russian missile attacks on cities across Ukraine, including Kiev.

Advanced air defense systems are designed to protect entire cities from air attacks. Monday’s Russian airstrikes in Ukraine killed 19 people and injured more than 100 and disrupted power grids in the country.

Yesterday, Tuesday, Ukraine received the first of four IRIS-T SLM air defense systems that Germany has committed to supply to the country, according to a German Defense Ministry source.

Speaking ahead of a two-day meeting of NATO defense ministers today and tomorrow, October 12-13, in Brussels, the alliance’s Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg urged the allies to provide additional air defense systems.

Stoltenberg characterized Russia’s missile attacks on Ukraine yesterday and the day before yesterday are a sign of weakness and the result of Russian President Vladimir Putin running out of options.

“The reality is that they cannot make progress on the battlefield. Russia is indeed losing on the battlefield,” the NATO Secretary General noted.

“Ukraine has the momentum and continues to make significant gains while Russia increasingly resorts to horrific and indiscriminate attacks on civilians and critical infrastructure,” he stressed.

Talks between officials from more than 50 countries will focus on providing additional air defense systems to Ukraine, US Ambassador to NATO Julian Smith said.

Ukrainian Defense Minister Oleksiy Reznikov will attend both meetings in Brussels.

The meeting of NATO defense ministers eit is the first big session of the alliance comes after Moscow annexed four Ukrainian regions, announced military mobilization and unleashed covert nuclear threats, moves NATO has called a clear escalation of the war that began with Russia’s February 24 invasion of Ukraine.

The attacks on the Nord Stream pipelines in the Baltic also contributed to the escalation of tensions, although it has not yet become clear who is behind them.
