Holger Winterstein has resigned as vice president of the AfD’s local organization in Sonenberg, announced Torben Braga, deputy representative of the far-right party in Thuringia.

An official of the far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) party in the central state of Thuringia has resigned after the uproar he caused by posing for a photo atop Berlin’s Holocaust memorial.

Holger Winterstein has resigned as vice president of the AfD’s local organization in Sonenberg, announced Torben Braga, deputy representative of the far-right party in Thuringia.

The AfD leader posed at the memorial to the victims of the Holocaust of Jews and others by the Nazis on the sidelines of a demonstration by supporters of the faction in the German capital. He was photographed with his arms outstretched. He then uploaded the photo to social networking site Facebook, before deleting it.

Israel’s ambassador to Germany, Ron Prosor, commented on the episode via Twitter, addressing his protagonist in the second person: “Mr. Winterstein, everyone is watching you while you dance, embarrassing yourself and your party.”

The vice-president of the International Committee on Auschwitz, Christoph Heubner, described the event as “disgusting”, speaking of a very heavy insult to the survivors of the Holocaust and the relatives of those who were massacred by the Nazi regime.

The AfD leadership itself condemned Holger Winterstein’s “extremely disrespectful behavior” in a press release.

Thuringia’s state interior minister, Georg Mayer, said the AfD executive’s action could not be “tolerated” and announced that a criminal investigation would be launched.
