Eighteen Syrian soldiers were killed and 27 others wounded this morning in a bomb attack that targeted a military bus near Damascus, the official Syrian News Agency reported. SANA.

It is one of the heaviest tolls on the Syrian army from such attacks in recent years in the war-torn country.

“A military bus was targeted near Damascus by a terrorist attack with a bomb planted in the vehicle,” the agency said.

In accordance with Syrian Observatory for Human Rightswhich is based in Britain and has a huge network of sources in Syria, the attack was carried out at the height of the community of Shaboura, west of the Syrian capital, on the road that connects Damascus to Beirut.

Many attacks, usually claimed by jihadists, have in the past targeted Syrian army vehicles.

Last June, 13 Syrian soldiers were killed in an attack on a bus claimed by the Islamic State (IS) group in the northern province of Raqqa.

In March, 15 soldiers were killed in an attack on a bus claimed by IS in the desert in the center of the country, according to the Observatory.

The last major attack in Damascus took place in October 2021, against a military bus and caused 14 deaths. There was no claim of responsibility for this attack.

After the Syrian regime regained control of its surroundings Damascus in 2018, violent incidents have been largely contained in the capital region.

The complex war in Syria, a fragmented country where multiple actors intervene, has since 2011 caused around 500,000 deaths, destroyed infrastructure and displaced millions of people.
