Fears that Moscow could use nukes in Ukraine have grown following Putin’s indirect threats, following the annexation of four regions and battlefield casualties.

EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has warned Moscow that its forces will be “annihilated” by a Western military response if President Vladimir Putin uses nuclear weapons against Ukraine.

“Any nuclear attack against Ukraine will create a response, not a nuclear response, but such a strong military response that the Russian military will be annihilated,” he said.

For his part, NATO chief Jens Stoltenberg warned Russia that it would face “terrible consequences” if it launched a nuclear attack on its “pro-Western” neighbor.

“There would be a sharp response – almost certainly from many allies and possibly from NATO itself,” Stoltenberg said on Wednesday.
